Last years cyber threats, and even yesterdays, may not top the list of newfangled hacks that your organization should prepare for. Witness WannaCry and other ransomware attacks of 2017. Ransomware is a threat that can really stop your business unless youre prepared to respond, says Roach.Budget for ongoing employee security training. Do your employees know what company rules say about BYOD security? Laptops brought home? Apps brought in to work? Make sure they do.A key vulnerability is the employee who doesnt know the companys acceptable use policy, says Roach. More and more companies are extending training efforts to the overall workforce, the CompTIA report says.Treat cybersecurity as an investment. Cyber threats are so numerous and varied that its not possible for any one firm to fully address them all. You ca n overspend on cybersecurity, Roach says. Theres a diminishing rate of return. So we try to set a baseline, but then the company has to own it.Its wise to retain a consultant to periodically recheck the companys systems, policies and practices for vulnerabilities.

How to Pitch Your Novel at a Writers Conference How to Pitch Your Novel at a Writers Conference So youve done the hard part: youve actually written a publishable novel. Congratulations! Now you just send it out and wait for the bidding war to start, right? Well, not exactly. Before you can convince a publisher to buy your work youll have to get them to read it in the first place. Publishers and agents are extremely busy people with stacks of promising manuscripts littering their desks already. You need to get your writing not just onto that stack, but right on top. To do that you need to pitch. What a Pitch Is A pitch can be verbal or written and often a combination of both. Verbal pitches are for face-to-face meetings with an agent or publishers. For beginning writers, this will most likely be at a writers conference. These in-person pitch sessions are a great opportunity for you to sell yourself and your writing. You have a real shot at impressing either an agent or editor and getting your manuscript read by the people who can get it published. Heres a quick run-down of what youll need to do before pitching: Finish the Work: Especially as a beginning writer, its important to have your book completed. Without a solid track record, its difficult to get an agent or publisher interested unless you can first prove you can finish a novel.Do Some Research: Find out which agents and publishers that will be attending the conference. You want to make sure they represent or publish the type of work you do. Dont waste your time and theirs by pitching work that doesnt match their specialties. So get online and do some research! Make Appointments: Schedule time with as many appropriate agents and editors as you can. The details of how to do this are specific to each conference, so consult the conferences website or your registration info. These appointments fill up quickly, so book early!Prepare and Practice Your Pitch: Then practice some more. Well discuss this in more detail.Look Your Best: Choose appropriate clothes and plan to look like a pro. As superficial as it sounds the publisher is buying you as well as your work. To successfully market your book they will also have to market you as an author. The more you look and act like a professional, the more comfortable agents and editors will be offering you a contract. Know What You Want: You are not going after a contract quite yet. The sole reason you are pitching is to get agents and editors interested enough in you and your work to actually read it. Thats it. Your pitch itself should be a short, interesting description of your novel that captures its best qualities. Think about the blurb on the back of a paperback novel - thats the level of detail you want. Your pitch should only be about 2-3 minutes long. Remember that your appointments will only be for 10 or 15 minutes each and much of that is made up of questions and small-talk. Keep it short and snappy. Open with something short and catchy. You want a few sentences that describe your novel in the most compelling and intriguing way possible. Here are a few tips to get you started: Hollywood-StyleThis works particularly well for genre fiction. You simply describe your novel as a mix of two other well-known (and profitable!) books or movies. For example: Its Twilight meets Harry Potter. Of course, youll have to explain what you mean by that in the rest of your pitch, but if its an accurate description (and it better be) then youre off to a good start.It should be at least somewhat ironic.It should paint a compelling mental picture.It should give an idea of genre and audience.It should have a killer title. The Save the Cat Method: Screenwriter and teacher Blake Snyder describes this method for coming up with loglines for film ideas in his popular screenwriting book Save the Cat. It also works well for pitches! The idea is to come up with a sentence or two that describes your novel and includes the following: Thats a lot to pack into a couple of sentences, but when you get it right its worth it. Heres a couple from movies you know (courtesy of ?Save the Cat):A cop comes to L.A. to visit his estranged wife and her office building is taken over by terrorists. - Die HardA businessman falls in love with a hooker he hires to be his date for the weekend - Pretty Woman Simple, clear and irresistible: This is the essence of your novel. Start here, add some colorful details and youve got a killer pitch.Write Your Own: Using the blurbs on the back of novels as a guide write up a pitch of your own. Make sure to state who your hero is, what his goal is, why he needs it and whats stopping him from getting it. Focus on the conflict at the heart of your book. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this formula. Hook Them Early This short intro to your pitch is critical to getting them hooked and wanting to hear more. Write several versions of it (15 to 20 is a good number to shoot for) then pick the best one and polish it until it shines. You cant spend too much time on this - if you nail this part of your pitch you are virtually guaranteed to be asked to submit your manuscript. Once youve hooked them with your intro then describe your book in a bit more detail. Remember that this is a discussion with other humans and not a lecture. Be natural and passionate and describe the key elements of your story in a minute or two. When youve finished, end by asking if your novel sounds like something theyd be interested in and take the discussion from there. They will probably have a few questions and then hopefully request a portion of your book to read. At this point be clear about what they are asking for - would they like to read the first few chapters or the entire manuscript? Get business cards and contact information, thank them and head to your next pitch! Practice, Practice, Practice Although pitching sounds difficult and nerve-wracking, it does get easier the more you do it. Most nervousness comes from poor preparation. To make sure you are as relaxed as possible when giving your pitch you should prepare it at least a week ahead of time and practice it daily, out loud. Do this until you can give your pitch in your sleep - the better you know your pitch the easier it will be to relax and be yourself. Remember that publishers and agents come to these pitch sessions looking for new authors and publishable new works. They need what you are selling. So be confident in your work and in yourself, practice and prepare, and pitch like a pro!

MEPS DOD Medical Forms 2807 And 2808 Used By Recruiters / MEPS The DD Forms 2807-1, 2807-2, and the 2808 connect the military recruiters office, MEPS, and the applicant seeking to join the military to one another by disclosing medical history information of the recruit. DD Form 2808 is used by the MEPS Medical Staff to document the medical examination. These are the primary medical forms/questionnaires the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) use for enlistment/commission in the United States Military. DD Form 2807-2 The applicant and the recruiter fill out this pre-screen questionnaire. It is to be completed by each individual who requires medical processing, in accordance with Department of Defense Directive 6130.3, Physical Standards for Appointment, enlistment, or Induction. The form should be completed by the applicant, with the assistance of the recruiter, parent(s), or guardian. Use of this form makes MEPS in-processing of individuals applying for service in the United States Armed Forces or Coast Guard more streamlined. Though it is recommended to make a copy for your records just in case the MEPS loses the form. The individual completing the DD Form 2807-2 will submit the form, at a minimum, one processing day in advance to the MEPS projected to process the individual. A minimum of two processing days in advance is required if support documentation is required to augment the MEPS review. If you have ever had a surgery, broken a bone, or had an ailment or birth defect, the military wants to know about it. Retrieve all medical documentation with a medical release form and submit records to the MEPS Medical Section. After the MEPS Medical Officer reviews the provided information, the appropriate recruiting service member will be informed of the examinees processing status, or if additional record review or specialty consultation may be required, for further processing or qualification determination. Additional Documentation The types of additional documentation the MEPS Medical Officer may require: copy of actual treatment records of the private medical doctor (PMD) office or clinic assessment and progress notessubsequent evaluation and treatment documentssurgical and physical therapy notes and recordsdate when released from doctors care to full, unrestricted activityemergency room (ER) reportsx-ray report(s), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) report(s), or Computerized Tomography (CT) scan report(s), etcprocedure reports (e.g., arthroscopy, electroencephalogram (EEG; brain wave test), echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), etc pathology reports (tissue sample reports)specialty consultation records (neurologist, cardiologist, Ob/Gyn, orthopedic surgeon, allergist, etc.).hospital record, to include (if any): ER report, admission history and physical, study reports, procedure reports, operative report (especially necessary for surgery to bone or joint), pathology report, specialty consultation reports, and discharge summaryIf an applicant has been diagnosed or treated since age 12 for any attention disorder (Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), etc.), academic skills or perceptual defect, or has had an Individual Education Plan (IEP), call the MEPS for additional instructions. Send all documentation relating to any past or present evaluation, treatment or consultation with a psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor or therapist, on an inpatient or outpatient basis for any reason, including but not limited to counseling or treatment for adjustment or mood disorder, family or marriage problem, depression, treatment or rehabilitation for alcohol, drug or other substance abuse, directly from the treating clinician and/or hospital to the MEPS Chief Medical Officer. DD Form 2807-1 Additional collection of information using this form occurs when a Medical Evaluation Board is convened to determine the ?medical fitness of a current member and if separation is warranted. However, this is primarily used to verify information of individuals seeking to join the Armed Forces. The information voluntarily collected on this form is used to assist DoD physicians in making determinations as to acceptability of applicants for military service and verifies disqualifying medical condition(s) noted on the pre-screening form (DD 2807-2). However, failure by an applicant to provide the information may result in delay or possible rejection of the individuals application to enter the Armed Forces. Expect delays in this process.

To Build a Beehive To Build a Beehive To Build a Beehive Engineers want to believe that if you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. Thanks to the Internet, the world now brings cash to jumpstart your business. Thats the experience of Stuart and Cedar Anderson, a father-and-son team from rural Australia. Via the crowd-funding site Indiegogo.com, they secured $12.5 million for a new type of beehive, one that enables beekeepers to extract honey through a tap without getting stung or upsetting the bees. Stuart Anderson, a former social worker, started a back-to-the-earth community outside Byron Bay, a town best known for surfing. Cedar, a 35-year-old musician, grew up there without TV or even a normal electrical connection. Both Andersons were beekeepers and backyard engineers. Stuart acted as the neighborhoods handyman. Cedar pulled apart abandoned cars (they were that far into the hills) and made musical instruments from their horns. About 10 years ago, after his brother was badly stung, Cedar began looking for a better way to extract honey from a hive. The Flow frame consists of partly formed honeycomb cells (A). When the frame is full, it turns into channels by rotation of a crank (B). Image: BeeInventive For the past 150 years, beekeepers had kept bees in boxes that held frames where the insects built their honeycombs. To remove honey, beekeepers donned protective suits, sedated the bees with smoke, and pulled out the frames. After cutting wax caps off the honeycombs, they put the frames in a spinner, extracted the honey, and returned the frame to the hive. Cedar wanted to simplify the process, but was stuck for years trying to figure out how to remove honey from the frames hexagonal cells. He eventually hit upon the idea of shape-changing cells. In the Andersons Flow Hive, each frame consists of rows of plastic cells with gaps at the top and bottom of each hexagon. Bees complete the hexagon by patching those gaps with wax. They then fill the cells with honey. When it comes time to harvest, the beekeeper inserts a crank. Turning it lifts one side of each row of hexagons. This cracks the beeswax used to complete the cell and turns the hexagons into a zigzag channel that runs from the top of the frame to the bottom. Honey flows down the channel, into a trough, and out a tap at the bottom. Reversing the crank realigns the hexagons, allowing the bees to chew out the wax cap and begin depositing honey again. Beekeepers do not open the hive, so they are less likely to get stung. The bees remain undisturbed, and may not even realize that the fruits of their labor are being siphoned away, Cedar said. Of course, not everyone thought it was so easy. If social media made Flow Hive a success, it also brought a wave of criticism. Some beekeepers complained that its very simplicity might reduce beekeeping to a mechanical process and promote poor practices that create health issues for nearby hives. Others fretted that it would encourage people to exploit bees instead of living with them in harmony. The Andersons reacted by listening. Their Facebook page encourages their more than 200,000 friends to join local beekeeping clubs and learn more about bee health and safety. In the meantime, though, the father and son are as busy as bees trying to keep up with demand. Beekeepers do not open the hive, so they are less likely to get stung. The bees remain undisturbed, and may not even realize that the fruits of their labor are being siphoned away.
