Social Workplace Influence - When the Grapevine is Good (Part II) - Workology
Social Workplace Influence - When the Grapevine is Good (Part II) - Workology For thousands of years, the workplace grapevine has been a social and cultural case study in action. Rumor mills, shared assumptions, and opinions have long been a part of what makes our place of work interesting, enjoyable, intolerable, or entertaining. In Part I of Social Workplace Influence When the Grapevine is Good, we discussed how the a negative workplace grapevine is a symptom and red flag to a larger workplace cultural problem and based on a recent University of Kentucky study, 72% of workplace gossip was balanced (including both negative and positive gossip) and only 7% of conversations were found to be predominantly negative. Social media experts are quick to segment the social audience when working on marketing or public relations campaigns. Managers and human resource professionals of organizations should do the same. The authors of Groundswell, Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff identified 6 groups in social media based on their auctions. While the Groundswell authors created these profiles for social media purposes, I believe they can be used in a workplace context. These six profiles to can help you identify the different types of workplace influencers and their involvement in what makes the community flow and who how thoughts and ideas are influenced. Creators. These individuals are extremely socially active and are enthusiastic about their hobbies, passions, dislikes, or love of a product, brand, company, or service. They are connected and have an established and strong community and seen among these community members as an authority because of their extensive research and ability to vet information to others. Critics. These individuals are extremely vocal and use either online or word of mouth to rate and critique products and services. These individuals can be your best allies especially if you have a great customer service department, stellar management team, or new program you are rolling out to the staff. Dont be followed by the word critic having a negative connotation. These team members can be an evangelist for your organization and culture. Collectors. These individuals have a great deal of influence and can generate a great deal of chatter in a short amount of time because of their extensive network and passion for sharing information. These team members focus on collecting information and content for sharing with other members of their active community. Joiners. These individuals want to feel like they belong to something. If online, they are very active on community sites like Facebook and are extremely engaged in places that involve a sense of community like churches and professional organizations. Their ability to connect with many individuals and persons is a draw for theses team members. They often time join for the sake of joining to belong. Spectators. These individuals love to sit back and watch and enjoy taking in the environment and situation soaking up all the information. Online these individuals are focused on using ratings and reviews to draw conclusions. Dont be surprised if they use these same methods of surveying and gather data when engaging and influencing your organization. Inactives. These are those individuals who are present and listening but not participating and engaging. They have one ear to the wall but have not made an effort to actively participate within the organization or culture. Just as they would do online. How to Present Like Steve Jobs Lessons from his Apple iPad Presentation
How to Present Like Steve Jobs Lessons from his Apple iPad Presentation How to Present Like Steve Jobs: Lessons from his Apple iPad Presentation A few weeks ago, McGraw-Hill sent me Carmine Gallos new book, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs. Gallo is a top presentation-skills coach; hes also one of my favorite columnists on Businessweek.com. Apple just launched the iPad, a new tablet computer. The McGraw-Hill PR team suggested that I compare the iPad presentation to Gallos points on Jobs presentation secrets. Timely idea! Gallos new book identifies 18 characteristics of a successful Steve Jobs presentation. In the analysis below, I highlight a few from Jobs iPad presentation. Create Twitter-Like headlines In the past, Apple used Twitter-friendly headlines to introduce new products including: MacBook Air. The worlds thinnest notebook. iPod. One thousand songs in your pocket. Heres the Twitter-friendly headline for the new iPad: âiPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,â said Steve Jobs, Appleâs CEO. In the book, Gallo tells us that effective headlines are concise, specific, and contain a personal benefit. The iPad headline wins points for brevity, but it fails the specific and personal benefit criteria. Heres why: Not specific. The iPad press release makes a marketing 101 mistake, It does not tell the reader what the device is. For instance, the press release does not mention the term tablet computer. The press release says the device is thinner and lighter than a laptop or netbook, and as a reader, I tentatively deduce that the device is a computer. No credibility or personal benefit. The MacBook Air and iPod headlines are grounded in fact. World thinnest notebook. 1,000 songs in your pocket. The iPad headline proclaims that it is magical and revolutionary. Magical devices do not convey personal benefit to me, especially without concrete reasons to believe. Develop a Messianic Sense of Purpose Steve Jobs loves the Messianic moment, and this Wednesdays presentation was no different. One of the early slides highlighted the following Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quote: Last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it. (Interestingly enough, Jobs could have followed the WSJ quote with a self-effacing comment. Instead, he embraced the Messianic comparisons with an indifferent Before we get to that The curious remark wasnt lost on the audience; they chuckled in the background.) Rule of Three Jobs loves to describe things in threes, and he used this technique again and again. Here are a few examples: Apple is a three product company: iPods, iPhones, Macs. Apple has three competitors in the mobile devices category: Nokia, Samsung, and Sony. There are three devices in the Apple lineup: iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Introduce the Antagonist Early in the presentation, Jobs calls out the villain: netbooks. Jobs identified the netbooks shortcomings: Theyre slow. Have low quality displays. Run clunky old PC software. Jobs concludes his three point analysis with the following, (Netbooks) arent better. Theyre cheaper. I liked this segment. Jobs makes it clear who the competition is, and we begin to understand why theyre better. Use Amazingly Zippy Words According to Gallo, Jobs likes to use words that are fun, tangible, and uncommon. Here are a few examples from the iPad presentation: Its the best browsing experience youve ever had. Its a dream to type on. Its that simple. (Repeated multiple times) Its wonderful. Its terrific. It screams. (In reference to the 1Ghz Apple chip) Its remarkable. Dress Up Your Numbers At the beginning of the presentation, Jobs shared some general Apple updates. Here are some of the numbers he shared: Sold 250 million iPods since 2001 Opened 284 retail stores 50 million visitors last quarter 140,000 (iPhone) applications 3 billion applications downloaded As Gallo mentions, these numbers are specific, relevant, and contextual. Jobs could have described his companys performance using terms such as same store sales and YoY growth. Instead, he chose descriptions that are easier to understand. Other thoughts Jobs iPad presentation includes several other techniques identified in Gallos book: Few, if any, ahs and ums Excellent pacing Frequent pausing for theatrical effect Lastly, I liked Jobs use of props, especially the leather sofa. Watching Jobs on the sofa, using the iPad, I could easily envision myself using the iPad during my off-hours. The prop was an effective, non-verbal way of convey that the iPad is a personal, not business, device. As a new product, the iPad is underwhelming; industry pundits have called the iPad a large iPhone. Nevertheless, I enjoyed analyzing Steve Jobs presentation skills. Gallos thoughtful, well-researched book was an invaluable guide in learning how I could be an insanely great presenter in front of any audience.

Why Passion is Necessary to Love Your Career
Why Passion is Necessary to Love Your Career Over the years I have had countless clients tell me that they arenât passionate about their career and are seeking that elusive career passion. They lament that others seem to have found a career they are passionate about and wonder what is blocking them from finding their passion. Do We Have to be Passionate About our Careers? I have also worked with plenty of clients who are passionate about their careers and Ive helped many others identify their passion. However, some clients do not want a career they are passionate about. Some clients want a job that challenges them on a regular basis, but leaves time for them to have a personal life whether to spend with family or to pursue their hobbies. For some individuals passion needs to be a component of their career, but that isnt the case for everyone. Criteria for Being Happy with your Career I believe that in order for an individual to be relatively happy in their career, their current job needs to meet 4 criteria: Skills Interests Personality Values If their job meets all four of these criteria to at least some degree, individuals seem to be content. Does that mean they have found their dream job? Not necessarily, but making sure all four of these areas are met will increase their satisfaction. When clients come to see me, typically one of these four areas is not being met. In some cases all four of these criteria are not being met. As we change and evolve, our definitions of the four areas above change. Our skills change and expand as we use them more more. Our interests change. At one point in our career we wanted to travel, but now, thats no longer the case. Our personality may evolve as we get older or as our situation changes. Our work values shift as different areas take priority. We may have ranked autonomy as our top work value and now we place more emphasis on teamwork and responsibility. As these four factors change, we seek changes in our career. Where Does Passion Fit Into Career Goals? You will notice that passion isnât one of my four criteria. However, passion comes into play for many individuals in their interests or their work values. For example, if they are passionate about helping others, they may rank that as their top work value. Or if they have a passionate interest in animals, they rank that as their top interest. Passion can play a role for certain individuals. So do we need to be passionate about what we do? It depends. Rather than blindly seeking our passion, it is important to understand what is important in our career and make sure those important items are being met. Use the comments section to tell us about your journey to find passion in your career!
